November 2023
Welcome to our November Newsletter!
We’re thrilled to share the announcement of the first Collaborative Coffee Exhibition at our lab in Central London. This project has been in the making for quite some time and it certainly is our most purposeful one to date. Our hope is that this will become a useful tool that coffee producers around the globe can use to initiate new relationships and promote their coffees and brands in potential markets.
If you are a UK / EU based coffee buyer (roaster or importer), please join us for this first edition. If you are a coffee producer and would like to know how to participate in future editions, feel free to get in touch to receive some information!
We will be hosting two presentation and tasting sessions on Friday the 1st of December, in the morning and the afternoon. For this first edition, we are welcoming and introducing coffee producers from four countries:
This event is open to all coffee buyers, coffee roasters and green coffee importers. Registration is required and available in the events section of our website here. A unique opportunity to engage directly with the people shaping the coffee production landscape at origin!
Join us on Friday the 8th of December for a (free) workshop about moisture content and water activity in green coffee, in partnership with market leader Sinar Technology.
When it comes to evaluating green coffee quality and longevity, moisture content and water activity are two of the most important metrics we look at over here at the lab. The information gathered from well calibrated equipment are crucial pieces of information used to predict the degradation of a coffee’s tasting attributes over time. It also gives us an insight into whether the drying process of a given green coffee needs improvement.
On this occasion, we will have the pleasure of welcoming Jason Webb, director of Sinar Technology, for what we think will be a fascinating conversation about the technologies used to accurately measure moisture in coffee. Jason has spent over 30 years developing and marketing moisture measurement systems and has helped setup Sinar 28 years ago. He will be able to answer any question you might have about moisture content, water activity, density measurement and the great Welsh rugby teams of the 70’s!
If you work with green coffee, as an importer, green coffee buyer or roaster, this workshop is not to be missed. Feel free to bring samples of your own green coffees along on the day to analyse together. If you own a Sinar moisture and density reader, do bring with it with you for the team to make sure it is still well calibrated.
Registration is free, but required, and available in the ‘events’ section of our website here.
We look forward to seeing you there!
There is more coming in 2024, and we’re open to new collaborations!
Since its inception, the philosophy and purpose of The Independent Coffee Lab has been to provide an accessible and well located community space dedicated to all coffee fanatics. While we have been mostly focusing on working alongside coffee professionals thus far, we are now planning more activities for coffee enthusiasts (i.e. non-professionals) in 2024. Brewing courses as well as ‘multi-roaster’ tasting clubs are currently in development internally, but we are also very keen on collaborating with coffee roasting companies and independent coffee trainers on specific events, tastings and workshops.
If you work independently in the coffee industry or are part of a coffee roasting company and would be interested in using our space in Central London to engage with your audience, drop us an email.
We’d love to hear from you and explore new ideas and projects together!
